The 7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb is one of the most balanced versions of the Machame trail. It combines varied mountain scenery with a strong acclimatization pattern and an extra overnight at Karanga before reaching Barafu Camp.
The route begins at Machame Gate and climbs through humid rainforest to Machame Camp. From there, the trail rises through moorland toward the Shira Plateau before reaching higher volcanic terrain around Lava Tower.
Day three is especially important for acclimatization because trekkers climb to approximately 4,600 meters near Lava Tower and then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep lower" pattern is one of the main reasons many climbers choose Machame.
Unlike the six-day Machame itinerary, the seven-day schedule stops overnight at Karanga Camp after crossing the Barranco Wall. The following day is then shorter, allowing trekkers to reach Barafu Camp with more time to rest before summit night.
The summit attempt begins from Barafu late at night or around midnight, climbing toward Stella Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters if conditions and trekker health allow. The descent follows the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp and finally Mweka Gate.

Detailed 7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or another agreed pickup location, meet your mountain crew and travel toward Machame Gate on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
At the gate, your guide completes registration and park procedures while porters organize food, group equipment and permitted personal duffel loads.
Begin trekking through Kilimanjaro's montane rainforest. The trail climbs steadily beneath dense vegetation, and rain is possible even when nearby towns are dry.
Your guide encourages a slow and controlled pace from the first day. Moving steadily rather than quickly helps establish a sustainable rhythm for the higher days ahead.
Arrive at Machame Camp at approximately 2,835 meters, where the support crew prepares the tents and camp facilities.
Change into warm, dry clothing if necessary, enjoy dinner and attend the evening briefing for Day 2.
Machame Gate (~1,800 m) → Machame Camp (~2,835 m)Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue upward. The rainforest gradually becomes thinner as the trail enters the moorland zone.
The route can be steeper in sections, but increasingly open terrain provides wider mountain views when the weather is clear.
Continue toward the Shira Plateau, where vegetation is lower and the landscape feels more exposed than the rainforest of Day 1.
As elevation increases, temperatures may change quickly. Layers should be easily accessible in your daypack.
Arrive at Shira Camp at approximately 3,750 meters. Rest, hydrate and pay attention to how you are responding to the higher altitude.
Dinner and overnight are at Shira Camp.
Machame Camp (~2,835 m) → Shira Camp (~3,750 m)Shira Camp to Lava Tower – Descend to Barranco Camp
Day three is an important acclimatization day. After breakfast, begin trekking into higher, drier volcanic terrain.
The route gradually gains significant elevation as you approach Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 meters. Reaching this altitude provides valuable exposure to thinner air before descending to a lower sleeping camp.
Depending on the schedule and group condition, lunch may be taken around the Lava Tower area or at another suitable location.
After reaching the day's high point, descend toward Barranco Valley. Vegetation gradually becomes more visible again as you lose elevation.
Arrive at Barranco Camp at approximately 3,900 meters. This day demonstrates the classic "climb high, sleep lower" strategy associated with the Machame Route.
Rest, hydrate and enjoy dinner while preparing for the Barranco Wall the following morning.
Shira Camp (~3,750 m) → Lava Tower (~4,600 m) → Barranco Camp (~3,900 m)Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp via Barranco Wall
After breakfast, begin the day with the Barranco Wall. From camp, the wall appears steep and dramatic, but the established trail follows a sequence of switchbacks and rock steps.
Hands may occasionally be used for balance on some sections, but the Barranco Wall remains part of the standard trekking route and normally does not require technical climbing equipment.
From the top, continue through rolling high-altitude terrain toward Karanga Valley. The trail includes both descents and climbs, making the day physically varied.
Continue to Karanga Camp at approximately 3,995 meters. The seven-day itinerary stops here rather than continuing immediately to Barafu.
This additional overnight creates a more gradual progression before summit night and gives trekkers more time to recover after the Barranco Wall section.
Dinner and overnight are at Karanga Camp.
Barranco Camp (~3,900 m) → Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp (~3,995 m)Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, leave Karanga and begin the shorter approach toward Barafu Camp. The landscape becomes progressively drier and more exposed as vegetation disappears.
Because the seven-day itinerary slept at Karanga, today's trek is generally more manageable than combining Barranco, Karanga and Barafu into one long day.
Arrive at Barafu Camp at approximately 4,670 meters. This is the base for the summit attempt.
Eat, hydrate and organize summit clothing carefully. Prepare your headlamp, warm gloves, insulated layers, water and snacks before the evening briefing.
Your guide explains the summit schedule, pacing and safety procedures. Rest for several hours before waking late at night for the final ascent.
Karanga Camp (~3,995 m) → Barafu Camp (~4,670 m)Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Mweka Camp
Wake late at night and prepare for the summit attempt. After a light meal or hot drink, begin climbing slowly from Barafu Camp.
The ascent is cold, steep and physically demanding. Headlamps illuminate the trail as your group follows a slow zigzag route through volcanic terrain.
Continue toward Stella Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 meters. Reaching Stella Point is a major achievement and the route then follows the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
If conditions and personal health allow, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.
Time at the summit is usually limited because of the cold and extreme altitude. Take photographs, listen to your guide and begin descending when directed.
Return toward Barafu Camp for a brief rest and food before continuing the long descent toward Mweka Camp.
Arrive at Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 meters for dinner and the final mountain overnight.
Barafu Camp (~4,670 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp (~3,100 m)Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi
After breakfast, begin the final descent from Mweka Camp toward the lower rainforest.
The trail becomes greener and more humid as elevation decreases. Wet or muddy conditions are possible, particularly after recent rain.
Walk carefully on slippery sections and use trekking poles if helpful.
Arrive at Mweka Gate, complete park exit procedures and meet the transfer vehicle.
Drive back to Moshi or another agreed destination, completing your seven-day Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb.
